Samedi: Il faisait tellement chaud.

a weekend to remember

Sunday morning we got up early and left for the Grampians (on the list of 1001 natural wonders of the world). Took a train from Southern cross station (melbourne) to Ararat, bus from Ararat to Stawell, Bus from Stawell to Halls Gap (main town in the Grampians, has a population of 300 people.). The Grampians is a national park and renown around the world for its rock climbing (which we learnt from rock climbers staying at Tims place (hostel). We arrived @ 12 and luckily the bus driver for the last part of the trip had hiked the area a few million times so advised us where to go. We followed his advice and took all 3 hikes he suggested. The first one, about 8kms, was through a valley following a stream to the Brambuk national park and cultural center. along the way we saw a ton of kangaroos and also 3 emus. The emus chased the kangaroos. We also saw 2 red bellied snakes (apparently posoinous), a superb fairy wren, and 2 shingleback skinks (that made me eeek). We then walked back to Tims place and after a little rest headed to Chatauqua Peak for a magnificent vue of the valley and stopped at Clematis falls on the way (not much water was flowing down). Along this walk Leslie spotted an Echidnae and we also saw 2 more shingleback skinks (which again caused me to yelp). The day was topped off with watching a game of Cricket (first time i sat down and tried to understand what was going on).... but the highlight was the fact that there were about 15 kangaroos hanging out on the field (some with babies in their pouches) just chilling there... and were only alarmed if the ball went there way and someone ran into the crowd of kangas to get the ball.
At night we chatted with people from our hostel from all over, cambodia, sweden, france, belgium and a few from Australia.

We woke up early Sunday morning, tasted some vegemite from John (the man tending to the hostel while Tim was in Paris) and started our hike to the pinacle (about 10km from where we were staying). This hike brought us through the Halls Gap botanical gardens, Venus Baths and Splitters falls before arriving to the Wonderland car park where most people start the hike. The first part of the hike led us through a beautiful canyon, the rest was quite steep but we took the long way up (passed the pinnacle because what you're following is arrows on the rocks... which can be confusing), and took in a breath taking views from the top. We took the shorter but steeper hike down.We then indulged on pizza and fries after feeling like we'd done more exercise than we have the whole almost 2 months we've been here and then took the long ride home. what a splendid weekend.

happenings.

Thursday I had the afternoon off and I headed off on a wonderful bike Ride. I headed down gange road to Glen Huntley and then down Glen Huntley until i got the Jewish Holocaust museum (about 30 minutes), it was very interesting and also very depressing. I then biked another 15 minutes down to the water front and fallowed a lovely bike path along the bay to St-Kilda where i cut accross and headed up Calisle... at this point i was slightly lost because i had no idea if this street came out on the princes hwy. but i hoped for the best and ended up making it home without to much trouble, on the way i stopped a the st-kilda botanical gardens. The gardens had a lovely rose garden, and there was a giant chess board where old men were playing, surrounded by tables where other old men were playing while having a beer. the park was buzzing with ppl relaxing in the park. Another highlight, Leslie and I made panang yummmm.!

Friday we went to the casino which was gorgeous and fun intself, bonus we both came back without having lost any money.

Saturday: Mainly, it was HOT, so hot and the sun was shinning. Anyway we took the tram to the Royal botanical gardens, making a stop at the war memorial. The gardens were beautiful and gigantic (theres australian gardens, chinese, cactus and so much more, we will have to return to explore more when everything is in bloom.). We then made our way to Fed. square because there was suppose to be Diwali celebrations, we had to wait a while though and refueled on tons of water, we later saw a dance and musical performance (this was after baring through a clown act... and a laughing group act (ho ho hahaha). For dinner some canadians from calgary we met at the botanical gardens when i was there with the kids came over for dindin, mmmm we stuffed our faces again.
Sunday: Ventured to Edithvale (south east along the bay) for Leslies friends god brothers bbq... yes we had never met them and they were quite a bit older but it was still tons of fun. Leslie and I picked up some wine and headed over for some great food and nice chats with ppl from the u.s, hong kong, malaysia, singapore, and a few australians. all in all a good time was had. Returned home for some sex and the city the movie and delicious lava cake.

A+

explor-age

first some more pictures wooo:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2201759&l=26939&id=121500314

hmm things have been quite busy lately. last week, the last day Joanne and John were here we first went to socatime joeys with Wyatt then we headed for a picnic at Brighton beach.. a gorgeous beach near here... ok maybe not gorgeous but very picturesque due to the row of colorfull boathouses.. the beach itself is covered in jellyfish and there was also a blow fish.
Next stop was the Melbourne botanical gardens, which i will have to go explore some more because i only spent time in the kids section, which was awesome in itself. It's a nice enclosed area that has a fountain that trickles in to a man made tiny river the kids can wander in, there is also a jungle with tall bamboo they can run through.... the kids enjoyed themselves, as did I.
Friday night leslie and i tried to get out of the house, we ventured to L'olivo, Julias desert pizza restaurant she praised, it was very delicious... tons of chocolate and sugar and strawberry's mmmm.
Saturday Leslie and I went out to Williamstown, just a short train ride south-west of downtown Melbourne, in the bay. It was intended to be the capital of the colony, and the town was laid with that in mind in 1837, but a lack of adequate fresh water ment they had to change the city center to Melbourne.Anyway we did many of the walks around the town, saw many historic buildings, walked out to the pier with a nice view on the downtown, and hung out near the shore and on the beach.
Sunday we took a lonnnnggggg subway ride out to the Dandenong ranges (a part of the subway line was closed so we had to take a bus to a stop further down and then jump back on the subway). anyway once there we walked up to the national park and took the 1000 step walk (also know as the Kokoda walk), a steep walk up the mountain through a rainforesty forest, full of ferns and colorful birds. this hike is designed to tell the story of how the Australian soldiers defeated the Japanese Army on the Kokoda trail through signs. it was a very nice but tiring walk. Tired we made our way back home.

This week i have been very busy with the kids, Mel is coaching ultimate frisbee at 4 different schools this week, and her and Jeff also play monday and wednesday night. It's fine though, I enjoy spending lots of time with the kids, going to the park and the library.
Yesterday I went to pick up my pictures that i had gotten developed to put all over my room.. now my room is almost complete. I shall take some pictures of it soon so you guys can see what my living area looks like.
that is all for now.

Last week I went to visit the Melbourne zoo with my museum pass. I got to see ton’s more animals not in the wild so I think now I’ve seen enough animals.. I’m just left to spot them in the wild. It was quite a big zoo, all your typical animals and then tons of different types of monkeys :).

Friday we booked a philip island penguin tour which ended up including a lot more than just penguin viewing. We went to a vineyard where we tasted 6 different types of wines, we then ventured to a small Australian sanctuary where we got to touch a wombat and see all the other typical Australian animals. Highlights were seeing a baby wallaby, baby kangaroos in their mommys pouches and a baby koala.
The down side of this trip was it was rainy and cold most of the day. Once at Philip island we went to a beach but didn’t stay for long because no one wanted to get out of the bus, it was still a pretty site though. Then we went to the Nobbies where we has tea and biscuits and walked along the beautiful coast (cliffs and rocky) it is from hear that you can see seals and such but we did not have binoculars.. And I’ve seen my share of seals.
Finally, our last stop was the penguin parade. We wanted good seats so Leslie and I went down by the water around 6, where we sat on a towel which did not help, the penguins only started coming out of the water at 6:30, and by then were were frozen, but it was still one of the cutest things I’ve seen. Little groups of they are called “little penguins” waddling up the beach towards you and then up the hill to their burrows. You could also observe them in their burrows from the board walk, and they were making lots of noise because it is mating season. Finally we headed back for pizza, and left with a small penguin stuffed animal.
(this is what they look like - http://www.lovetravel.com.au/photo/Phillip/2535_night%20penguins_web.jpg)

Saturday night was a time change, we spring forward so it’s is now a 15 hour difference.. And once Canada Falls back an hour it will be a 16 hour difference.

Sunday morning I got up early and headed down the great ocean road with Mel, Joanne and John. We left at 7:30 and our first stop was at Torquay where there are a ton of surf shops. We then continued, stopped at a few viewing points, saw a whale.. Who knows what type. Our next stop was in Lorne where there are a few shops along a street near the water. Mel knew of a place where they had seen koalas in the wild before, so we stopped there and saw about 7 of them, so cute. We also got to see a seal about 2 meters away at Lock Ard Gorge. We stopped at Apollo bay, Thunder Cave, London Arch which are all popular spots along the great ocean road. You can check out my pictures to see what these all look like. We finally made it back to Jeff and the kids at 9:30.. twas a long but beautiful day.
